Green Machine II

I mentioned a few posts back that I had put together an entirely ODG (olive drab green) AR. I like the color, it goes well with everything, and, honestly, black rifles get a little boring. On the other hand, finding accessories in basic black is a piece of cake. Finding accessories in ODG, however…that takes some work. Well, thats not really true…what it takes is money. But, Zero wanted an all-green gun and, dangit, thats what Zero got.
Sling – MagPul M4 Sling
VFG – Magpul VFG
Rails – Timber Creek aluminum rail segments in ODG
Sights – Magpul BUIS in ODG

I’m a bit disappointed that the QD socket attachments were only available in black, but you can’t have everything. I’ll be swapping out the muzzle device for some sort of QD-supressor-compatible device as soon as I figure out whats available. And, the glaringly obvious glaring barrel might just be left as is..or it might get the rattle can treatment…we shall see.
And since TPIWWP:

  1. Looks like a handy carbine.

At the risk of asking a stupid question why not just slap together the parts you want (or got a deal on) and take them to a shop in town to get it ceracoated or otherwise painted in your favorite shade of tactical tan?

    • Well, that certainly has it’s place. Part of it is that I really don’t like modifying a rifle any more than I have to…I prefer thatif I want something, that something was done at the factory by the guys who have done it 10,000 times with all the proper tooling. Yeah, its just a coating, but its one more thing that someone could Bubba andthen something desnt work right….a spring hole getting clogged, a tolerance changing, etc. I just have more confidence when whatever I need is provided or installed by the factory.

  2. That is a nice looking rifle.

I think the cerakote training classes are over in Washington or Oregon, probably a long day’s drive if you wanted to get certified. Not sure how big a discount you get as an authorized agent, but you do like to do things right and that stuff sticks to anything when you bake it on right.

  3. BarBeQue gun……..

    Don’tcha think.
When I was in VN in 1969, we had the old black M-16s. The enemy doesn’t care what color your rifle is………… They are too busy staying alive, and taking your life…

  4. I never cared for the various flavors of colored rifles because they never ever match. The FDE crowd has the same problem, just a sliiiightly different color brown means the slide doesn’t match the grips doesn’t match the barrel… I know, we’re a bunch of pussies, worried about how the gun looks, not how it performs, LOL!

  5. Off topic but wondering…. You live in big really big bear country. Even more so if you find wild property. Have you thought about a big bore AR? Seems like that would be the cat’s ass for big bears. Just wondering but it seems like a no brainer.

  6. Was in an all day training course that covered a lot of topics. One of the very first things out of the instructor after the safety brief was about the color of everyone’s rifle. Of course everyone’s rifle was black, and he said that needs to be fixed. Black stands out too much, and is more noticeable and hostile(? can’t remember his exact words) looking. Got home and bought some camo spray paint and surprised myself with how well it turned out. Wouldn’t do it to every rifle, but having at least one that blends into the outdoors makes sense.
