My buddy at the coin shop made a massive buy today and offered me Krugerrands at spot…but I was in no position to take him up on it since I kinda shot my wad with those Swiss francs last week. But, he did have something of interest. I walked in and he reached under the counter and handsed me what certainly looked like a pipe bomb. But, no, it was something else entirely:
It was a PVC pipe made to fit 100 1-oz silver rounds. Tell me youre a survivalist without telling me youre a survivalist. The backstory is that with gold and silver being pretty up these days, this guy decided to come in and sell some of departed dad’s stuff. When a guy packs his silver away like this you can sorta get the impression that he’s on the same page you are.
I had to take a pass…..need to recover from the gold purchase. But it was still pretty cool to see. And seeing tubes full of krugerrands is always a nice reminder of Life Goals.
For those who havent been keeping up, gold has passed the $3000 mark. Infer from that what you will.
Makes me wonder what more fun stuff his departed Dad had, he does not want.
I have seen pvc pipes filled with 100 out silver bars come into our store. Grandpa died and they were dug up from tha dirt floor of the barn. The 2 20ish yr old grand kids came in our store with very well dressed lawyers who asked for our assistance and appraisal on the items. Mulitiple 3 ft long tubes….we opened them up and they took up 8 ft or so of our counter. The look on their faces when we opened them up and water, sand and 100 ozt bars were pulled out.
My inference from that is that the current US dollar is actually worth 7/10ths of 1¢ in absolute historical terms and stable purchasing power.
Every trip to the markets and stores confirms this reality.
That’s not a bad approach, not just for coins.
Put some silicone grease on the threads and throw a pack of desiccant in there. As time grows short, I sometimes wonder what will become of the great stash of items in my humble abode. Started making an inventory list to help my sons to figure it all out.
A while back, during the great caliber reduction program, I gave a good buddy of mine an ammo can full of factory.40 cal. He called me and asked if I had forgotten anything. I said, ‘not that I can think of, why?’ He found $1200 in cash in an envelope at the bottom of the can I had stashed and forgotten. Good thing it was him, hardly anyone else I know, including family, would have given it back!
One has to wonder what’s buried out there that people forgot about.
Not only that, but there are plenty of stories on the internet of people remodeling houses and coming across all sortsa interesting stuff hidden in walls. Machine guns, cash, drugs, evidence, etc, etc. Heck, there was that guy that died in California a few years back and when they started gutting the house they found jars and jars of gold coins. And theres this legendary haul: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saddle_Ridge_Hoard
And while we are on this fascinating subject….https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_hoards_in_North_America
Kinda sad that the son didn’t see the wisdom of holding onto real wealth. Instead he chose to trade money for debt and probably felt good about it.
Well, thats probably the most likely course…but for all we know he took the money and bought arable land, dug a well, installed a big-ass gate at the driveway, and installed some solar panels.
