Ruger RXM

Ruger has developed a bit of a reputation for ‘borrowing’ other gun makers designs and running with them. Usually they tweak it enough that its not a straight up clone. That level of discretion has apparently left the building. I’m guessing they call it the RXMbecause calling it the G19 was too obvious.

A collaboration between Magpul and Ruger, they’ve basically taken the ‘modular’ idea of the swappable fire-control unit from SIG and stuffed it into a not-a-Glock-19. Cleverly, Ruger seems to be letting the polymer masters at Magpul handle the frames while Ruger handles the metal bits. Makes sense.

I have a SIG 320 with the swappable FCU and it’s an interesting concept…buy the serial-numbered FCU and then you can change out your frame, slide, barrel, etc, with unregulated parts…much like how a stripped AR lower opens up a huge avenue of ‘customization’. If you live in a place where there’s a limit on how many guns you can own, this is a nice workaround to having a full-size, a compact, a ‘race gun’, etc. all with only one ‘firearm’.

So you have huge customization with the FCU concept, takes Glock mags, have early third-party support from Magpul (who are making the frames, it seems), optic cuts, steel sights, etc. And I’m seeing them at $400~ or less, dealer cost.  Assuming Ruger doesn’t do it’s usual new-product-recall, they might have finally created the polymer striker gun they’ve been trying and failing at for years.

Is there a reason to get this rather than the SIG 320? Glock magazine ubiquity might suggest so. Is there a reason to get this rather than the Glock? SIG-style FCU modularity seems like a big sell. And Magpul will be offering this in all sortsa colors, I’m sure.

This might actually turn Rugers amazing always-the-bridesmaid-never-the-bride history of LE contracts on its head. I need to get one of these to play with.

ETA: Also, mad props for not incorporating an interchangeable backstrap system. At least, not yet… I suppose aftermarket frames might incorporate them, but I find them to be almost useless. Also, my vendor shows dealer price at $340 which seems reasonable.

  1. there are a few videos out already on it and reviews… the one video I watched, the main question seemed to be not when but if the other frames, slides, and barrels will be available anytime soon…

  2. Following. This would be a good powerplay move by Ruger chads if the performance and reliability quotient meets or exceeds muh glock reputation. I would advise those gun lads out there if you are invested or stocked already on glocks, stay with any brands or parts etc, that are in a commonality with your existing glock models. The logistics train of support for glocks i.e. magazines, parts, holsters are just as or more important than just another gun companies iterations or introductions. Wars are really only won by logistics being superior. Don’t branch out into all manner of cool and new regarding guns and kit when standardization is more important in collapse, embargo, and behind enemy lines conditions that may/will occur in your a.o. While I was working in a “YE OLDE GUN SHOPPE” for years, I often noted new models coming out and bought by the cool kids, only to have sketchy follow on support of magazines, holster, aftermarket enhancing parts, etc not being available as it would be with the “American Chevrolet of guns” commonality of the glocks product lines. Think long term and worsest case scenarios for your armory inventories. Stay frosty.

      • Pshhhhaw! Distinct or odd-ball are what makes a gun collection fun. Not every gun in the inventory needs to be a Armageddon load-out item. Weird and fun to shoot is good. Its what keeps us coming back to our shooting spots.

And who’s going to talk shiz about your choice to strap a Colt SAA if you have enough ammo to use it in serious situations? Rock that SAA like your Wild Bill. When the 45LC gets scarce, move it to a post-disaster bugout cache and rig up the boring Glock.

If its what you want, find a way to make it work in your preps. Having a common platform for the group is important for training/familiarity, but anyone who is past L1 of the gun nut ability should have freedom to adapt their kit to fit them.

  3. Meh. For me, no more guns that “shoot with forked tongue — I mean trigger.” It’s a fake safety. And polymer means in 30 or 50 years the plastic bits will disintegrate. I won’t be around to worry about it, but someone I care about might.

    • I dunno, man…there are plenty of first-gen Glocks sill out there that havent turned into plastic dust. My 2nd Gen G19 is at least 27 years old and seems to be chugging along just fine.

  4. im old school but i will just not have a side arm without a hammer or a safety. i saw a news report the other day about some dude that shoved a Glock in his waistband and shot his nuts off, he didn’t make it. cleansing the gene pool, darwinism and all that.

  5. I think by now everyone was just waiting to see who came out with a FCU handgun that used Glock Magazines and as many parts as they could fit into it. I expected the first to be Glock or even PSA, but it being Ruger came as no shock.
I just wonder how long before someone comes out with SA rifle/carbine that takes this or the SIG FCU. Unless it’s 9MM there is no need to use the magwell just put a STANAG magazine before it. It could be posted anywere in the USA nd no license need it buy/own/make/sell.
I don’t think it’ll be long before we see a longarm rifle/shotgun/both[?] FCU on the market.

    • I’m confused. I purchased a PSA ‘build a gen3 Glock’ kit last year. NGL, I like the feel of that PSA more than any Glock I’ve held. That sandpaper grip locked onto my hand.
