Magpul Backpacker for PC Carbine

I loves me some takedown gun action. I’ve a Model 12 Winchester that fits in my backpack so i can keep it handy for close encounters, and I’ve always liked the idea of a takedown 9mm carbine. When Ruger came out with their PC Carbine in 9mm that took Glock mags…well!

And now Magpul has sweetened the deal.

I know, I know…there’s always that contingent in the comments who feel the need to pontificate about pistol caliber carbines are worthless, etc, etc. Look, dude…Springfield’s Evac has, apparently, become vaporware and Ruger discontinued their takedown AR as well. So except for some boutique shops, there’s not a lot of mass produced takedown semi auto guns in .223 or 7.62.

Besides, I like the streamlined logistics of one caliber and one magazine between pistol and carbine.

Regardless, I just ordered the stock off Brownell’s. Let’s see how it works out.

  1. OOOH! Me likey! Only issue I have with it (the Ruger) is it’s a mite small for my overly huge self… (of course I make an M249 look like a sidearm, and have fired the M2A1 from the hip for five rounds) but I do like me a small portable takedown. My personal is a M-6 Springfield former Airfarce .22LR/.410 over/under. Got it back in the early 90s and -somehow- have managed, despite the slings and arrows of outrageous law-enforcement, to keep it.

  2. Out of curiousity, why did the KelTec Sub2000 never interest you? It is a very similar concept (if not better because is snaps into action). It comes in a few different models to accomodate many pistol magazine types. I have had one for 6-7 years and thouroughly enjoy it. What are your thoughts?

  3. I’ve always been on the hunt for a decent takedown or carbine in 10mm. A while back, I purchased two of the Springfield XD in 10mm when they came out – one with 4 inch barrel, and the other in the target model with 5 inch barrel. Love each of them “as is”. However, I later discovered the CAA USA stock option on DVOR, which is literally a “drop-in the pistol” folding stock with rails, mag holder, etc. Understanding there is no change in barrel lengths, however, the handling of the system makes that ordinary pistol stand out like a SBR. I purchased a slide adapter and it now works with my XD in 45 ACP as well. I keep everything in a briefcase sized bag…very portable. Just throwin it out there…

  4. This is a solid concept for caliber commonality. Too many tacticool felliows and beardboy operators are overdosed on the plate carriers and muh ar-15 load out kit dogmas. Having a light, easy to drive carbine that feeds on a globally universal caliber same as your sidearm is very common sense smart. The pistol caliber carbine fills a big niche role also for usage by slight statured females (the real ones), inexperienced juveniles in training and development of arms use, and elderly or infirm. I experienced a nasty fractured offfhand wrist and was sidelined half a year. A pistol caliber carbine would be helpful for any necessary home defense scenario if one was in a disabled status, or grows to a ripe old age. The Berretta CX-4 matches magazine usage with the m9/92f pistols but doesn’t take down or fold. Looking forward to your follow up report on this. Thanks.

    • Addendum note. Sportsmanguide has the “recover” stabilizer kit for glock pistols. 89.00 bucks. A fold out brace / chassis for many glock model pistols. Made in Israel. Appears well thought out and designed, but I have no range reports to offer on performance. May be product of interest for folks to utilize on an existing gun to provide support and aid in performance instead of buying a whole other platform firearm. Cheers.

  5. A friend has an MCX conversion for his Glock
Side folding stock, spare mag holder, can use with rail light.
    Interesting.
Believe they’re only for Glock at this time.

  6. I recently purchased the Ruger PC Carbine and am happy with it. One thing–my eyes are getting old so the rear sight on all rifles seems to be moving closer all the time. I mounted an inexpensive scope and sighted in at about 125 yards. Perfect for my purposes and fun to shoot.

Agree on the logistics point. Looking to add a Marlin lever gun in .357 to go along with the Ruger GP100s.

  7. How about a GAU-5/A equivalent? pistol sized AR with a QD barrel using the CryHavoc kit?

  8. I cut my teeth on pistol caliber carbines many years ago with a used Marlin Camp 9 that I picked up for around $200.00. Since then we have added several more 9mm pistol caliber firearms to our gun safe. It made a lot of sense when 9 mm ammo was cheap. The top 3 are all Glock magazine compatible.

    Ruger PC9 Model 19122

Brigade Manufacturing 9mm with brace in 9″ barrel length

Fox trot Mike 9mm with brace in 7″ barrel length

Yankee Hill Machine KR7 Carbine using Colt style 32 rd mags

    Scorpion Evo 3 S1 9mm Carbine 30rd, 40rd and drums available

  9. PS 90 (doesnt really need to be taken down to fit in my knap sack) wearing an Eotech and a Ruger 57. The 50 round mag makes up for the inconvenience of a different 20 round mag for the pistol – or do I have that backwards?

Got ammo when it was $22/box (of fifty).
