Those ammo cans are 18″x11″x6″ and are marked as being for belts of 40mm for the lovely Mk19 GL. As it turns out, each can will hold 34 Magpul 30-rd AR mags. Or 69 Magpul 27-rd Glock mags.
Yknow…in case you ever need to know something like that.

Master of efficiency CZ. Appreciate follow up.
They’re not cans, but cardboard boxes 12″ X 9″ X 9″ are perfect fits for 24 each 15.5 oz cans. I build “food units” with them – 8 ea protein, veggie, fruit (I don’t store canned fruit more than 120 days past its “best by” date because unlike meat and vegetables, fruit isn’t cooked so it spoils faster and the acid in fruits attack the can causing leaks). The space between the cans gets plastic knives, spoons and forks, there’s 4 P-38s taped to the underside of the box lid so 1 box = 2 people 4 days at 2 meals/day. The boxes are good “pack tight shelf fits” on 48″ or 60″ wide wire rack shelving.
Turns out the same box will hold 41 AR-15 Magpul 30 round mags.
Cardboard is one of the worst things to store anything in. Not only is it the preferred medium for roaches(food/shelter/egg laying) but absorb water/odors amd what is the most likely container to fail? Only positive is cheap and large variety. Any cardboard that has passed thru a food warehouse is guaranteed to be infested.
Absolutely right, but….for compact, short term storage cardboard has its place. A half-dozen quite compact “grab ‘n’ go” food units on a shelf in cardboard does not constitute a crisis, a few more than that as “hand-outs” to the needy and worthy in times of crisis also makes sense. Everything you own in cardboard? That’s a “no.”
As for magazine, etc. storage, cardboard – which is cheap – also makes sense to keep things sorted while one searches for affordable more permanent storage containers. Beats the heck out of one large bin of “everything mingled together.”
Thanks for that. I have *one* of those 40mm cans – it’s my repository for old holsters, but perhaps it’s time to get some better use out of it.
CZ, just curious, is that quantity in or out of packaging?
In. Although the polybags change the external dimensions of the magazine by virtually nil. However, I like to store tings in original packaging if possible since that makes them more attractive for later sale/trade.
I use .50 cal boxes for loaded 30 rd Magpuls, color coded to the rifles- each holds 10. Also keep 5 loaded in each rifle case. Makes it easy to grab-n-go if needed.
I have a couple of those I got years back when Big Lots first opened around here. The problem is when you load them up with ammo you can hardly lift the damn things. But they do store the ammo quite well. We had hoped at the time that Big Lots would end up selling more surplus. But that didn’t happen.
Loved shooting the Mk-19, wish we civilians could own one. Just as a side thought… I have heard that if you bury metal ammo cans, to coat the outsides with some type of spray on truck bed liner or rustoleum. Also, attach an iron thing to the handle to help keep the rust out. Not saying I do this, but a good thing to listen for.
How many mags for a SA35?
How would I know and, more interestingly, why would you need to know?
Well you are planing on getting four or five.
I find that .50 cal. cans hold 1000 rds of 5.56 quite nicely.
