Most Americans are not aware that along with the attack on Pearl Harbor, there were simultaneous attacks on Singapore and the Philippines. Pearl was a hit and run attack, but the Singapore and Philippine attacks were followed up with invading soldiers.
My uncle was stationed in the Philippines in December 1941. He was surrendered in April 1942 after being chased around Mindanao for several months. When he was rescued from the Japanese POW camp in 1944 he weighed 86 pounds, and had experienced the joys of forced labor, regular beatings, beriberi, scurvy, and malaria. He had started out weighing 193 pounds.
He never bought a Japanese-made car or major appliance the rest of his life.
