For reasons that Ive never understood, I have always been fascinated by the story of the ‘Four Corners “surivivalists”‘ who got into a shootout with the cops and then disappeared ten years ago into the desert. One by one their remains turned up in the desert over the years. Someone stumbles across a pile of bones and a mound of rusted gear and the nex tthing you know the FBI is crossing a name off the list. The final guy, JasonWayne McVean, apparently fared no better than his comrades…cowboys found his gear and remains a few months back. Note the rusted topfolder AK in the picture of his gear.
The manhunt for these guys was remarkable for the way they simply disappeared as well as for the surprising amount of stuff the search parties encountered…including a hidden bunker belonging to an uninvolved citizen. Its a fascinating story and worth reading.
I never met Bob Mason, but I know his brother. To this day, he maintains that Bob didn’t commit suicide.
Why would he have been carrying pipe bombs around in his backpack? That’s not a very survivalist piece of kit, is it? Seems like a bunch of dead weight.

Well, the one guy had a bullet hole in his skull, a busted ankle andsome of his gear was missing so I can guess howhe died. No idea how this one died. Im guessing a suicide when he felt his situation was insurmountable but I think with prior planning these guys could have pulled it off and gotten away.
Survivalists?
They sound more like ‘giveruppers’. While I don’t know all of the details, if bad guys are going to start shooting and killing LEO’s they should have planned on folks coming at them fast and hard, and maybe they deserved it, maybe not. Hiked around in the desert for a few days and wind up croaked? I just got back from a four day solo in the same area and gained weight for crying out loud! And I’m 49 years old. Good thing these clowns didn’t fight in WWII or we would be speaking German.
