A couple ridiculous sales on Amazon today…Pelican cases at really good prices including shipping, if you have Prime. These are the ‘trunk’-type cases. I use them for storing my winter survival vehicle gear, but they are also perfect for off-site storage at your resupply or secondary locations. The 1650 is the one I use. Since I’m stuffing it with a sleep system and a ton of other gear, I usually don’t get the foam insert, which brings the price down.
It appears that without foam costs more, for this case. I notice that they have new variations of their cases, the “Air” models. Apparently made with a new material and different construction techniques to best use it. Lower weight is the goal they were after. I see 40% and 28% lighter specs listed. Supposedly the 40% figure is for the competition, the other for their original material case. I wasn’t aware they still had competitors, at least here in the US. They bought out both of their homegrown ones, since they were better products, but much smaller companies.
Buying through Amazon is about the only way I would buy a Pelican product, as their customer support is non-existent, unless you are a .gov purchaser. I bought a display case from their booth at the SHOT Show about ten years ago, but you can’t pick display items up until the end of the show (obviously). I neglected to open the case in the rush to get out the door. Discovered they had robbed the foam (which explained why the case was closed when I got to the booth, they look crappy when empty) when I got to the security checkout, and they wouldn’t allow me to reenter with the badge I still had on me. Called the guy I bought it from, got sent to deal with someone else (since the original seller was in the military group), and never got my foam.
Looked at the other guys next year, and by the time I decided which to buy, Pelican had bought the companies. Not a happy camper.
BTW, my fix for the missing foam was to buy a soft case that just fits in the hard case. Cost is about the same as the good foam, but it does give me the option of just going with the much lighter soft case, if I don’t need the heavy duty travel/weather protection. One potential drawback is access is slower, as you are opening two cases to access the weapon. Upside is that I can buy cheaper cases with open-cell foam and toss the foam using this method. Closed cell foam is expensive stuff, but the open cell stuff acts like a sponge with moisture, so don’t use it for storage.
I have been using brief case size Seahorse brand cases for medical supplies and have been impressed by them…not sure if anybody else has any experience with the brand…HPRC seems to be another competitor of Pelican though I have zero experience with them…apples and oranges?
