Hunting

Hunting season opens this weekend. I just don’t have the time or resources to go. As much as I would love to spend the day tromping around in the woods, the practical side of me knows, with utter certainty, that the opportunity cost and the expenses involved make just going to Diamond Bar Meats and buying half a steer a much more economic option.

But, honestly, I don’t hunt for the meat… I hunt because I like the experience. The meat is just the bonus part. Its been a long time since I needed to hunt. I suppose I could say one of the reasons my basement looks like a Walmart grocery center is so that I don’t have to worry about hunting.

Still, I do miss the experience but I have to be practical – there are things to do and as a grownup you sometimes have to do the unfun things.

But, for those of you going out this weekend, I wish you luck! Tell Bambi I said hi!

  1. Some places are just dangerous to be out(idoits shoot at movement without identifying target)

  2. I hunted for years, and never killed anything. It’s the experience of the hunt, and as soon as you kill something, you’re done. No more hunting, no more adventure. And that’s also when the unpleasant work begins. Blood and guts.

It was never about the meat. It was time with friends, time alone in the solace of the wilderness. I can buy all the meat I want, and only the cuts I want, at the meat market or grocery store. And cheaper in the end.

It has been a long time since I needed to fight, but I like to practice now and then.

Sounds like something a grasshopper might say.

Not being harsh since I enjoy your work, Z. Just sayin’.

    Unbreakable AZ

  4. Bambi will live in our area too. Lots of rain in September have provided a lot of natural forage and cover – game will not have to travel far and be easily concealed. Grass is tall and thick, tree branches heavy with leaves and their products. Deer hunting leasers will be pissed !!

But game animals are due for a break – back to back to back droughts in past years caused a lot of fawn die-offs and populations were really cut down, pertaining to deer sightings. Even feral hog numbers were lowered – that is saying something because those sumbitches are survivors !
