Outage

I was talking to a guy from New Zealand today and he pointed out that Britain’s largest export is independence days…. they’ve created something like 90 of them. I was amused.

================

Had some good rain the other day. For some reason my part of town lost power and I had to haul out the generator. Second time in the last three years I’ve actually needed the thing for a genuine event. Function? Worked great. Had internet and television. The battery backup for the security cams worked fine as well, although I need to disable that annoying warning beep that keep playing the whole time…as if I’m not going to notice that the power is off.

===============

It was about this time last year we had the ‘big” earthquake. Definitely a reminder that I might need to do some special disaster-specific preps like tying down that other hot water heater.

=================

Hope you all had a good Independence Day and got to the range.

  1. Left work at 11am; went home and hid in air conditioning. And drank. Too hot/humid for me to hit the range. I pray the revolution comes in a non-hot time.

  2. Good work Zero with the genset. They are great but the key is getbone that is reliable and quiet. Didn’t get to the range on the 4th, but went today with a buddy who had a groupon at the new indoor range we have shot at before and I had an invite. Results as follows:

    1) KelTec Sub2000 Gen 1 in .40S&W- stock mag works great. The extended Promag 15 Rd does not feed reliably occasionally. I will work on the feed lips with a Dremel, seems sharp and pinched in a bit.
    2) S&W Compact in .40S&W- flawless function with handloads or factory.
    3) Ruger SR .45- Same as above.
    4) Remington R51- This thing continues to confound me. First round fine, then it locks back the slide and won’t feed #2. It is the most complex field strip from a pistol I have ever seen in my 40 plus years of shooting. I might have put it together wrong. Take down again and investigate. Cool gun, just a pain to take down and reassemble.

    • Those R51’s….you might be better off unlaoding it to some poor slob.

  3. I was working out of town in Miles City MT 2 weeks ago. A large storm moved through and caused s power outage. It was the weirdest feeling after living off grid for 5 years. I felt a little anxious to tell you the truth though I was prepared with my flashlight next to my bed and my get home bag. Although the thought of trying to get across the width of Montana with a 3 day bag seems daunting. Glad you got a test run on your genny.

  4. Sadly I was working on Independence Day. Which is to say we were sitting in the Medic Base playing the Inner City Game, “Fireworks or Gunshots” all night. Went ok.

    Good work on your genset, I have the same problem with the UPS for the servers and satellite setups, damn constant beeping till I rig up the power cords. But you post reminded me again to go check the fluids and start the gens for those sort of situations.

    • Broadly , I try to run the generator for about a half hour every month with some type of load.

  5. Used to run my gen monthly or so but having just checked my list in the garage a couple days ago I found that I’ve needed it 8 times in the last year for outages. Some as short as 2 hours or so but a couple multi-dayers as well.

  6. Always nice to have the gear you need to take care of business. I wish I only had to use my generator a few times a year.
