Looks like winter is really here…the temperatures have been dipping into the low teens and that means int’s time to break out the winter gear. Last year I wrote several posts about the gear I keep in the vehicle during winter months. Well, it’s time to wheel that Pelican case outta storage and toss it in the back of the vehicle.
So, if you havent already done it, it’s time to put the winter gear into the vehicles, guys. Don’t be That Guy we read about on the news who gets hospitalized after getting stranded and winds up missing a few toes and fingers. You know better!
Time to swap out my summer tires for my snow tires. I should have done that two weeks ago, but I’ve been traveling.
Winter has finally decided to show up here in Wisconsin. The highs in our 10 day forecast are all below freezing. Because of the rather extreme cold we can get here and me doing most of my getting around by foot or bike (almost everything I need is within a 2 mile radius of my place) my winter kit stays in a backpack that I keep by the front door and I haul it to the car on the rare occasions that I go motoring about in winter.
I’m on the road all day every day for wirk. Thursday I went out 90 to St Regis then to Dixon, back to Huson (way up 9 mile). Finally finished up near Missoula 20 Miles from home. Your reminder is a good one. When I first started work my GPS took me up nine miles to an address that only existed in GPS land. I lost cell service 17 miles before the address and almost spend the night on the side of a forest road. Our trucks have trackers but they only work with cell service so it wouldn’t have told anyone that thought to check where I was.
I learned 3 lessons that day. Never assume the GPS will be correct ( I always call before going to a remote area now). Never go someplace remote without communicating with someone where your going and when to expect you. Finally never be without your emergency bag.
I put around 40k miles on per year. Most of it within 2.5 hours of driving time to home (long walk if need be), some of it as far as Glendive or Glasgow (10hours). I always have a bag weather it’s winter or summer.
