Still working on it

Still working on it , guys. Be patient. One way or another, this is gonna be wrapped up over the next few days. The losses, though…..still working on that.

Not sure what exactly happened. As you guys know there was a problem with posting comments last week. In trying to get that straightened out I think I would up just making things worse and worse until finally there was nothing else to do but burn things to the ground and start over. I did make a database backup so there is the possibility that I didn’t lose 11 years worth of posts but I haven’t tried restoring it yet. Thats on tap for later tonight.

Expect things to still be flaky for the next couple days.

Now, in the spirit of “never let a crisis go to waste’. let me impart some advice to my fellow bloggers:

Do regular backups of content, images, styles, themes, and databases!

Kids, I can’t stress that enough. I didn’t do it and its gonna cost me big. Also, I’d like to mention that the open-source community at WordPress.org were totally unhelpful and of absolutely no use whatsoever. The Indian (thats Indian with a 7-11, not Indian with a feather) gal who was on Yahoo’s support line, however, was worth her weight in rupees. BUT…I blame Yahoo for this mess to start with so..zero-sum there.

As I said, still working on things, and that’ll be most of my weekend, but you may find things to be intermittent around here as I get things setup and try to recover from some salvaged files.

  1. I wouldn’t go nuts about the losses – consider this a chance to start fresh with what you know now, what you’d change in your prior advice/posts, and what is most useful to hunt down and restore. I think that last will be a very small amount when weighed against the work necessary to do so.

  2. The drawback is that there is a wealth of info in those older posts not to mention the comments.

But we all live and learn.

Plus you’re reminding me on this that I haven’t backed up my hard drive in a couple weeks. I learned that one the hard way a couple machines back when I almost lost it all when Windows crashed. External hard drive plus critical files on two separate thumb drives is comforting.

    Steelheart

    • I need to worry less about backing up my 1tb porn drive and worry more about backing up my blog files. Geez!

      • You’re using WordPress, right? Automate that stuff!! I use the Updraft plugin. It’s free. Backs my sites up daily, puts the files on Dropbox and sends me an email confirmation. Works like a charm.

        • Yeah, Im investigating backup options as we speak, actually. Thanks for the suggestion, I’ll check it out.

        • Updraft Pllus, it is. Thanks for the suggestion. I just managed to recover 90% of the old posts and now I need to make bloody sure theyre backed up.

  3. Hard call, porn or blog. Porn – really never gets old and is always entertaining. Blog, never done one but have to imagine that at some point it turns in to work. You have certainly passed the mark where it turns in to a job to keep it going.

Like field of dreams, build – or rebuild it, and they will come. Maybe its time to ditch the current setup and start over. Just saying…option. Imagine…all the best material gets to get reposted as new stuff! Start over as Commander 0.1 or Mk 1. Might be fun.

Seriously though, that sucks – I hope you are able to get it back together.

  4. I guess the Indian thing is different in each region – we would say ‘Red dot, or ‘How!’?
    We’re all assholes, eh? 🙂

Sorry to hear that you’re still dealing with system issues. I run a blog for my daughter and it’s got 9 years worth of posts and content so..yeah.. I can empathize.
The website is a VM running under Hyper-V so it gets backed up once a week (all the VHDs) and then weekly, the OS and data inside the VHDs are backed up to external drives. Need to make sure this stays around until she’s old enough to want to take it over 😉

    • I have some theories….but, really, no matter what the cause my lack of timely backups is really the big problem. And, honestly, Im trying to forget the whole thing and move on.

  5. At work we differentiate between Casino Indian vs. Slurpee Indian.

Perhaps it’s time to take all the old posts, weed out the filler and create an indexed “Best Of Commander Zero’ PDF.
