New stubby non-NFA shotgun from Mossberg

These things really are wildly impractical, unless you’re expecting trouble in a long narrow hallway, but the fact that .gov restricts them is all i need to want one.

Anyway, apparently as long as the shotgun receiver never had stock on it, and the overall length is 26″, it doesn’t fit the federal description of ‘shotgun’. Without a handy category to pigeonhole it into, it is simply a ‘firearm’. Whats this mean? It means you can have a 14″ barrel on a little shotgun that doesn’t require the $200 song-and-dance.

Yes, I’ll get one. Because.

Some video of it from TFB:

I must say, between ‘arm brace’ workarounds on SBR’s, and this little quirk to get sub-18″ shotguns, it’s an interesting time to be alive. Perhaps this sort of thing will convince the powers that be to scrap the whole nonsense….but I doubt it.

  1. Do I need it? No. Will I probably buy one anyway. Yeah, probably. I’m a sucker for a good .gov workaround, and love to give business to companies that come up with these creative solutions.

    • Anyone that sees a .gov roadblock and constructs a legitimate, legal-within-the-framework workaround is deserving of my business and support.

  2. I seriously, seriously, want a 20 ga double barrel shotgun, like in all the British gangster movies. Same reason as you, it just looks cool.

I’ve been half seriously looking for a working, cosmetically damaged old double barrel AH Fox or something similar for a song, but chances of coming across one is pretty slim.

    • Remember under the NFA once a shotgun you can not turn it into a ‘firearm’ (we need a better name). I bet BATFA wish that they let that 18 buy a pistol grip shotgun. It started when they told some one under 21 that a pistol grip shotgun was not a shotgun as it did not have a stock – yes we know that 18 year olds have been buying pistol grip shotguns for years but now they are not for under 21s. So some one thought not a shotgun so no 18″ barrel needed and the only thing BATFE could do is stick to the 26″ OAL.
Zero’s first or second gun when 18 was a pistol grip shotgun a Mossberg 500 and in Brooklyn NY at that. http://www.commanderzero.com/?p=1958
As for short double barrel shotgun I’d love a black powder one no laws on any length so 12″ barrel and 18-20″ OAL.

      • K. here.

I not any knowledge about any case pertaining to 18 vs. 21 year olds buying shotguns. However, that could be in line with their official definition. This is how these companies are getting around the barrel length requirement(see CAPS below).

“The term “Shotgun” means a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and INTENDED TO BE FIRED FROM THE SHOULDER, and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of the explosive in a fixed shotgun shell to fire through a smooth bore either a number of ball shot or a single projectile for each single pull of the trigger.” – BATFE

If it doesn’t fit their definition it isn’t a shotgun(even when anyone else with any common sinse would say it is)…

        • 18 to 21 years old long arms only i.e intended to be fired from the shoulder so no handguns or pistol grip only.

      • It looks like I may be wrong (it had to happen one day) about you can not make you own. To me it looks like only If the gun came from the factory with only a pistol grip – I don’t know how you prove it – you may be able to. No way I’d do it for a year or two.
There is a site selling kit to turn a Mossberg 500 in to a ‘firearm’ (still say we need a better name).

At first I said no way but looking at the letters from the BATFE it looks like it may be OK(ish). Though tomorrow it may not be – this is the BATFE.

        • Yeah, it’s all legit. As for figuring out the status of the configuration from the factory, it would be easy enough to go by model type/number. Mossberg “Cruiser” models I think are all PGO, if you have the box it came in or call Mossberg with the S/N, they should be able to tell you the 5(?) digit model number and in what configuration it was manufactured/shipped in if you lost the box and can’t remember of if you buy it used. Remington also makes at least 4 PGO from the factory models and KAK Industries makes a “Raptor” grip for them as well. The “Shockwave Blade Brace” KAK makes should theoretically be ok to install on an adapter for either brand(or others) as well just as they are ATF “ok” on AR and AK type pistols.

    • Have you considered a Stoeger Coach Gun? It’s a pretty affordable side-by-side available in 12 ga. and 20 ga., and in “standard” and “tactical” models as well.

I agree that SxS shotties are pretty neat, and also nice and short by nature.
