The cabin looks horrendously difficult to fabricate, but that’s just me. y’think all those angle are to reduce direct, straight-on projectile hits?
VERY interesting concept.
Lessee if I grasp the concept from these photos.
1. 4 Blast cushioning seats on a central pillar in the “blast bucket” crew pod.
2. 2 gullwing doors for the 2 side crew/dismounts to make a very fast exit from the vehicle.
3. ring mounted crew served weapon
4. Blast bucket looks to be more or less separate from the chassis in the event of a VBED/IED/Mine blast. The chassis looks largely sacrificial in favor of crew survivability.
5. 2 Piece split rims for runflat inserts and beadlocks (No apparent CTIS)
6. Front mount heavy bumper/Ram Plate
7. Top mounted hatch for driver and side crew egress w/ side mounted boarding ladder.
8. Well thought out rear cargo area for extra kit, ammo, packs, gear, etc and side mounted stowage on the fenders.
9. Lots of enclosed side stowage bins.
10. firing ports for the crew for personal weapons.
Amendment to #4, The Blast buckey is designed in the lower area to deflect blast effects from mines and other blasts from below as well as from the front and side with extra angles and a minimal signature. RPGs are less likely to strike the smaller critical area directly on. For what we’re doing currently, it’s pretty optimal.
I’d add one thing, a power traverse turret for the crew served weapon to put the gunner under/behind more armor protection.
I don’t see a cage. That’s a cheaper way of stopping RPGs. And when it comes to mines the hadjis seem to be able to string together enough artillery shells to get the job done regardless of the amount of armor. I’m wondering just how many it would take to breach this thing, or blast it high enough in the air that it kills everyone on landing.
IIRC this is to replace the armored Hummer?
a few questions
is this for the military?
how much is the pricetag?
Re: a few questions
Yes.
Probably the same as, if not a bit more then the current humvees.
Granted, I’m speaking directly from my ass…
Re: a few questions
by “Yes”, meaning it’s a prototype designed to show the military what this research group thinks the humvee ought to be replaced with.
The standoff cages only stop some varieties of RPGs and they’re a lot of additional weight. In this case, the best defense is a small core that is harder to hit. My Ferret would be good for patrolling in Iraq, far better than a HMMWV except for the lack of Air conditioning. Still, British troops used them in Aden.
Re: a few questions
this new thing was actually designed back in the mid seventies according to a few sources, before humvees. guess most forgot to mention this little ommitted detail.
