A very cool story out of the hurricanes…regional power companies that showed remarkable innovation and perserverance.
As an electrical power company what do you do when your fleet of trucks needs diesel and its in short supply? Why, you head over to a local refinery and pipeline and say ‘Hey, we can get your power back on if you’ll give us a supply of diesel.’
Freakin’ brilliant.
Great story – read it here.
Great article. That article shows how companies are supposed to act in times of crisis.
Heavy emphasis on decentralization and autonomous decisin-making.
or
adapt, improvise, overcome.
Nowhere near the impact, but along the same lines..
We had to load our ISO shelters to leave Ellsworth AFB in South Dakota. Due to some idiot in TMO, the forklift was double booked, and the other people got it first. We were done, hot, tired, wanting to leave etc., and the forklift wouldn’t be ours for another 6-8 hours.
Luckily we remembered we were on a CE (Civil Engineering) site, so we went looking and happened to find the NCOIC. A case of cheap beer and about 20 minutes later we had a huge ass crane loading our gear, and we were out of there in 45 minutes total.
People getting refineries up and running again are doing the same sorts of things. Just shows what you can do when you can keep the government from helping you 😉
It’s amazing what can happen when you give people the authority to get the job done, not just the responsibility to get the job done. Very damn cool.
