As I mentioned ( http://www.livejournal.com/users/commander_zero/55619.html ) I sent off to the folks at Oregon Freeze Dried (Mountain House) a request for dealer pricing and whatnot and, son of a gun, they sent me their dealer package. Got it today.

So, as I suspected – this stuff is way overpriced at retail. How much? A very nice 50%. MSRP is twice what dealer cost is. Nice margin if you can get it. So, my beloved #10 cans of FD spaghetti with meat sauce that MSRP at $18.20 per can now cost me a mere $9.10. More importantly, freeze dried meat!!! FD beef, normally $45.53/can are $22.77/can. Hmmmm..

I need to email the local LMI’s and let them know so we can start ordering this stuff up by the case. (Six cans/case..must order in case lots.) This way we can split the case lots so I dont wind up with a bunker full of spaghetti instead of the more appetizing variety of foods.

Whats available in the #10 cans, you ask?

There is a discount on the pouch stuff (including their new vaccuum-sealed pouch which uses less space) but its closer to 40%.

Needless to say, Im going to have to start socking some money away and upgrade my long-term food supply.

  1. Interestingly, youre going to go a long way to get this stuff to weigh 100#. According to the info they sent a #10 can of pretty much anything weighs less than 2#.

  2. I realize I’m no economist, but if retail is 2x what dealer cost is, doesn’t that make it a 100% markup and not 50%?

  3. Depends on how you calculate your profit…

If you buy for 100 and sell at 200, then 100 is your profit out of 200 – %50 profit. 50% of 200=100

    or

If you buy for 100 and sell at 200, then your return on investment is 100%

I look at things kinda skewed.

  4. >I look at things kinda skewed.<

    No way. You? lol

Okay, I have no experience with freeze dried items except for the winter MRE’s. (and I only had two of them issued in seven years) Is that the stereotypical “just add water” deal?

  5. Thanks, I knew you had a review somewhere but I didn’t remember if it was in LJ or on your site, and I hadn’t made it to the site to check yet.

  6. I think you’re describing the difference between markup and margin. An item that’s been marked up 100% has a profit margin of 50%.

  7. And I’m wondering if it can be shipped easily to canada. Grr customs.

The next question is, if it is kosher to mail, are you willing mr zero ?

  8. I really dont wanna be in the business. BUT…since I have to buy in cases of 6 and Im pretty sure therell be times I wont want 6 of an item, I might sell of the other half a case….and if that happens you can be sure I’ll post about it.
