Well, the German Flectar parkas arrived this morning. Three size “L” for myself (giving me a total of four sets) and one size “S” for the girlfriend. European sizing tends to be different from American sizing. Europeans tend to be small people so a size “L” to a European would come out as an “M” to us Americans. However, it seems to make sense that the outfit selling the parkas (Sportsmans Guide) would offer them in the American sizing system to avoid confusion. This appears to be the case. I’m 5’9″, 200# with about a 46R and the L works fine. Good lovin’ for $20. I’ll vaccuum seal one of them, stuff it in a cardboard box and keep it in the truck. One will get the same treatment and get put with the grab-n-go gear in the bunker and the third will go into storage.

Also picked up the Mr Heater Buddy. (Read about it here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/commander_zero/38929.html ) It was on sale at Sportsmans Warehouse and I wanted something convenient and portable. Runs off of the 1# bottles so its pretty convenient. CostCo sometimes has 6-packs of the bottles on sale and Ive a couple dozen on hand in the bunker. I’ll get a few more just to play it safe. Still need to get the extra kerosene heater though. I want an extra kero heater so I can keep my basement above freezing in case of a power outage in the winter and thus keep my pipes from freezing.

I am hoping my 26.5mm flares for my HK flare pistol arrive today. If so, mmmmmmmm….testing, testing, testing!!!! With photos, of course.

  1. When you get a chance to try the Mr. Heater Buddy, would you give us a report? We have a couple of kerosene heaters, but we were thinking about buying one (or two) of those, too. I have reptiles and rodents, so when the power goes out for any length of time in the winter, our heat requirements are pretty high.

  2. I tried it out the other night, just for familiarizations sake. It would do a much better job if it had a circulating fan of some sort but that would require electricity and I bought this specifically for a situation where there is no electricity. What I’ll do is probably turn off all the heat to one room of the house, see how cold it gets, and then run this thing in there to see if it’ll warm it up to a manageable temperature. When I do that, you’ll read about it.

  3. Are you also getting the adapter so you can hook up a 20# BBQ tank to it as well?

We bought one for our Coleman 2 burner camp stove, we can do a lot of cooking with a big propane tank.

  4. I’d like to…set up a tree so I can run the lamp, heater and stove if I were so inclined. They all say the same thing – when using a 20# tank to keep the tank outdoors, any ideas why? Is it really the end of the world if you use it indoors?

  5. Sizes

Did the size small fit your girlfriend well? Would you (or she) mind telling me what US dress size she is, so I can determine what size I’d wear? A link to the place where you bought them would also be appreciated. 🙂

What kind of vacuum sealer do you have? Or more importantly, what kind would you recommend?

  6. I was reading that bit about using it that way, only thing I can think of is that if you should pass out from the CO they hope it runs out of fuel before you become permanently asleep.

At any rate, they seem pretty adamant about adequate ventilation!

  7. A friend used a propane heater and 20# bottle on a little cart to heat their kitchen for several years. They had no problems, but their house is relatively leaky. Yours probably is much more airtight due to your colder climate. And you wouldn’t want to run it in a basement where any heavier-than-air propane leakage would pool and cause an explosion hazard.

  8. It’s the danger of heavier-than-air propane leakage that’s the serious problem. It can pool along the floor in a fairly airtight room and present an explosion hazard.

  9. Re: Sizes

I wear a size 4, but I think the small would also be comfy up to a size 6, Maybe even an 8 – I don’t have a HUGE amount of room in the shoulders of it. I’m 5’3″, 120 pounds, and the small could not possible fit any more perfectly.

I think the parkas came from Sportsman’s Guide.

The vacuum sealer is the Food Saver brand. He likes it. 🙂

  10. Youre missing my point, man. I would think the distributor, to avoid getting a slew of returned product, is listing them in US sizes. I ordered a L, I wear an L, and this fits. So, go order an L (if thats what you wear).

  11. Yep… for want of one sentence (“This appears to be the case.”) the meaning was whacked about the head and neck with the stupid stick. Oops!

I’ll have to go back through and see what they have in low-speeed, high-drag sizes. Thanks.

  12. Got one of the parkas myself, pretty nice. I’m a borderline L/XL in US sizes and this fits pretty well, noticeably more snugly than my US-issue large, though. The outer shell is thinner than the US one, but with the winter liner it’s quite a bit heavier — a more flexible garment overall, and with more pockets and things as well. Thanks for the heads up.
