Powder and primers

An acquaintance of mine had brunch with a regional commercial ammo manufacturer the other day. He was told that he should expect primers and powder to become unobtainium by the end of the year due to manufacturers commitments to war production.

:::yawn:::

My own sources, notably the guys at Black Hills Shooting Supplies, sent out a notice with their most recent catalog saying the major manufacturers are all raising component prices here in the next couple of months and that availability may be uncertain.

:::doubleyawn:::

Look, it isn’t like primers (and caps, if youre a black powder guy) have been easy or cheap to find in the last couple years. Just expect more of the same. Fortunately, I am part of that crowd that learned a lesson after The Great Primer Scare in the Clinton era and as a result I have about 50k of the things on hand at any given time.

These “I have a friend….” warnings are always to be taken with an enormous grain of salt. But, do we really need a reason to stock up on powder and primers? I got lucky and just bought out an estate that left me with about 12k primers and dang near 40# of assorted powder (including black), and you can be pretty sure I’m just gonna set that back with my personal stash ‘just in case’.

  1. Thank you, Dr. Joe, 2006 my brother informed me of the passing of a man I never met and who provided what I consider a life saving gift to me and mine. His family was selling off his property and real estate agent insisted concrete structure be cleaned out. They contacted my brother who called me. For 1000 dollars I filled 3 pickup trucks, a mini van and a small car with reloading supplies. I bought weaponry to match calibers because there was so much stuff. Again- THANK-YOU DR. JOE.

  2. We do have the inevitable election related panic coming up also.

    I went big enough on a couple of those I’m not worried any more. Zero’s old “how many hours at minimum wage?” to get X exists. Like most things modest but consistent effort beats short term panic.

    Can use a few things for sure. About $300 in misc gear and mags would be nice. So would a few more boxes of ammo. However that is always the case. We only have so much time and money always has competing requirements.

    • Email me and let me know what those needs are. I’ve a buncha miscellaneous things from auction/estate purchases recently that I need to unload and if its something you need I might be able to swing it your way at a steep discount.

  3. At SHOT show in January, both Remington and Winchester personnel told me they aren’t sending any primers to the reloading market at this time; everything is going to their ammo or their partners ammo.

    There are a bunch of overseas companies working on importing primers, but I doubt they’ll be enough to replace the unavailable domestic supply.

    At this point, it is almost as cost effective to buy loaded ammo as it is to buy the components, especially for common less expensive calibers, particularly 9mm.

  4. It’s been years since I saw large rifle primers anywhere. I got an e-mail a year or so ago for CCI large rifle primers went straight to the source. No stock no back order.

    I wonder is this is someone telling them to not work overtime or three shifts to starve the private market from supplies. Didn’t they do something like that at Lake City a year or so ago? No over time or third shift and no production for the private market?

    Best regards,

    Roadie
