Still Moar Ruger

This time, though, not another 9mm.

Something a little different from the run-of-the-mill cataloged pistol…if you know what to look for.

ETA: Its a Ruger #1740…stainless GP-100 .357 Mag with full underlug five-inch barrel. I am a firm believer that a 5″ barrel revolver is the ideal length. Not too long and front heavy like a 6″, and not so rear-heavy and stubby as a 4″. As a general-purpose do-it-all length, I find the 5″ to be ideal. Finding holsters however…….

  1. I have the same revolver. And for the same reasons you stated. El Paso Saddlery seems to be the best bet for a 5 inch model. Their holster/belt options can get expensive fast. That floral pattern is really beautiful. I may even go cross-draw. The one I put together would cost $358. That’s for holster only. I may have to scale back.

  2. I agree with you and Rick Grimes from The Walking Dead.
The bedside gun is still a Model 13, and several speedloaders of reloads.

I want anyone I have to shoot to stay shot.

    • TWD rocked! For a while.
“I want anyone I have to shoot to stay shot.”
My thought exactly. Being poor, “quantity is a quality of its own kind”, hence my Glock 17. Lotsa smaller holes are more affordable than a few big ‘uns.
Thet shore is a purty pistol, Mr. C.

  3. Following. Envious, but that keeps everyone in the game, so as to keep up with the jones in those aquisition competitions. Those hogue grips are better than many forms of grip panels, however the rubber material seems too tacky or soft for my preferences. (Muh recoil reducing!, o.k.) I prefer the pachmyr type of grips and it’s material compositions in that category. What grips do you anons prefer on your magnums? Of course being a commander or a local ‘lord AT war’ may require some fancy named wood material, or gold and silver cartellish grips commenesurate with your new found status. Good find whilst the economy and systems are still holding up. Get it engraved too, so as to appear a cool kid and frosty out there.

    • All of my revolvers sport the factory oversized wood target grips, except my model 63 & 34 kit guns in 22lr.

  4. If I had to take off quick and have room for only one handgun, that would be it!

  5. When the GP-100 first came out in the mid-80’s I bought one. Blued 4″ full underlug. I shot it for a couple of years and sold it to a friend. I used the proceeds to buy a Colt King Cobra 4″. The Ruger is still going strong( and so is the Colt) but I missed it. So I bought a GP100 Match in 10mm in a 5″ barrel. Typical Ruger, its bullet proof and soft shooting, very accurate. I had no trouble getting a leather holster for it and I’m a southpaw! Ruger’s are great guns. Congrats!! TTFN

  6. “Hi, I’m Zero. It’s been 37 minutes, er, check that. It’s been 45 seconds since I last bought.”
That full under lug is front heavy. My 6 inch Security Six with the short under lug was just fine, but that full lug really helps control of hot loads the short under lug not so much. That extra inch or two really made the 357 shine on wild pigs. It just seemed a better punch that my Smith 4 inch. I was much more accurate with the Ruger single action but double action the Smith was better. Trigger on the Smith was Sooooo much better. I would be curious about the trigger on this beast. Report coming soon?

  7. I put spring kits in all my sp-101’s and my gp-100’s . Didn’t go with the lightest springs because I got a couple of no fires.

  8. Rusty Sherrick (c-Rusty.com) makes the best holsters I’ve ever seen, and I’ve been carrying handguns from trousers-on to trousers-off since 1976.
Do yourself a favor. Imagine exactly what you’d like, then have him make it.

  9. I have the 4.25″ Match Champions in .357 and 10mm. They supposedly have some extra action work from the factory and I think they are better out of the box than most of the current S&Ws and I’m a Smith guy. I’ve had to polish the rebound slide and put in a reduced power slide spring in all of the new ones, even the Pro Series and Custom shop guns. Unfortunately, even the rebound slides are now MIM parts and don’t take a polish like the older guns did. Gray Fox

  10. I’m jealous and frustrated. I’ve been looking for a GP100 for the past year and a half. None of the gun stores within 200 miles of my home have it in stock. None of them appear able to order a new one from Ruger either.

I’m not usually one for ordering online and having it transferred to an FFL. I prefer to pay in cash at the store. Oh well. Enjoy it.

    • Dude, easiest and cheapest is to just go hunt GunBroker and have it shipped to your friendly FFL.

  11. For those waiting for their custom holsters, consider grabbing a Bianchi X-15 shoulder rig. A light jacket will usually suffice for concealment, although if you are packing a 6 inch+ barrel you might need a bush jacket for enough coverage. I’ve got them for a 7.5″ Redhawk, 7″ Ruger Govt.Target .22, and other shorter guns.

  12. That Hunk deserves a nice presentation case w/couple speed loaders, cleaning rod/kit and maybe a Lee Loader for a real Lord of the Wasteland kit

  13. I love revolvers in general and favor them with a 3 inch barrel. Just like the balance and the way they point. Wiley Clapp edition of the GP100 is my favorite. Messed up not buying the Hawkeye version when I had the chance. I’m looking for a Lipsey’s Distributors Model 1768. Deep high gloss blue with half lug 5 inch barrel.

  14. I’m new here. My Gp100 is from ’89, a blued, 3″, fixed site with Ruger compact grips. The only time I shot it at any significant distance was 60-70 yards. The dead jerry can had a nicely centered paper plate sized group with fast stepping 125 gr. jacketed hollow points. I wasn’t looking for a tight group, I was shooting relatively quickly, single action. Not trading stock. I also have a Colt, pre Trooper 357 from ’62 (a skinny barrel Python). It shoots small groups, but the Ruger is my “bet yer life on it” revolver.
Found your site at a Bayou Renaissance Man link. It’s a GOOD one!
