AK mags

I’m not really an AK guy. Yet, somehow I have managed to acquire three of them.. a milled Arsenal, a milled Norinco, and a WASR-10 of some flavor. I still have gobs of 7.62×39 laying around, so I decided to keep the AK’s since having a military-style semi-auto with plenty of ammo is never really a bad thing. And, of course, logistics rears its ugly head. If you’re gonna have a buncha AK’s, youre gonna need a buncha AK mags.

Ok…will 200 be enough?

I went for an even split of 40- and 30-rd mags. These are the AC Unity mags that you’re seeing all over the place. Made in ex-Yugoslavia they’re pretty good mags. The nice feature is metal locking tabs front-and-back. Ordered in bulk from Robert RTG (bookmark that place, guys) they came out to, with shipping, $4.87 per mag. (10% on 100+ mags.)  For that kinda money, I don’t mind having a bunch of extras to someday sell to the unenlightened masses when the next mag ban comes rolling in.

This is, by the by, on top of the AK mags I already have. I went deep on AK mags a few years back when those metal Korean AK mags were coming into the country. And prior to that I had a buncha ChiCom mags. For a guy with only three AK’s, I’d say I’ve got the magazine end of things covered.

One is none, and two hundred is….one hundred?

  1. Commander:
    When is plenty too much?
If you are trying to get together enough money for your little piece of heaven, then when will you look at your arms locker and say “OK that, that and those can go, which will add to my bank balance.”
There MUST come a day when your “piece of green” matters more than SOME of what’s in “Deep Store”.

    Ceejay

    • Yeah $500 here, a grand there, etc adds up to real dollars eventually.

Incidentally the GF and I are saving for a house together with a little bit of land. Till then hit the numbers to cover my piece I’m not buying any guns or significant gun related stuff. I’m also not going on expensive trips or whatnot. Just the usual everyday normal expenses for a few months.

  2. I hear a theme, sell the extras when things get spicy.

LOL, got a Ferengi to run the front office?

In Bosnia the AK was often referred to as the Gypsy Lady. She hid in old cellar wall repairs for decades to emerge with maybe 2-3 magazines for family service.

I’m sorry, but I couldn’t find the exact number of hunters in Minneapolis, MN. However, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, there are 550,087 registered hunters in Minnesota as of 20201. This number accounts for 9.8% of the state’s population.

So how many showed up to stop Burn Loot Murder from their “Mostly Peaceful Protests” in Minneapolis, when almost 10% of the population is hunters?

Just asking for a friend or three

    • The twin cities are blue as can be, last R mayor was 50 years ago. The hunters are rural, not urban. Would you protect places that are owned by people who hate you, so you can get arrested and prosecuted?

      • Sorry not as clear cut as that friend.

You are quite correct that reasonable fear of police arresting YOU for the crime of Self Defense (or property defense) IS a realistic problem.

Seems even today in the defund the police era the police seem eager to arrest the safer targets, the employed gunowner vs the thugs.

However, given my states city vs rural those rural hunters had relatives living in those cities. Friends and such.

Not sure if telling to suck it up or deal with it is good for long term family-friendship.

Again, I submit that aside from a few gentlemen guarding that gun store nobody showed up.

Bodes poorly for expectations that folks will rally around a leader to defend the rural town.

I’m watching the Feds telling the Texans RIGHT NOW they cannot stop the illegals, it’s against “The Law” or such.

So, I expect the idiots Of DC to double down on defending the RIGHTS of the Undocumented to do whatever pleases them using police and perhaps military force.

I’d like to be wrong but history and recent American history isn’t kind to that thought.

The 3 “S” still apply. Hogs gotta eat.

  3. The old AK vs. AR argument can be resolved by ‘why not have both’. If I have to grab a rifle and go off running somewhere to battle zombies then the AK is the one I will probably be taking, along with the various mags (mostly 30 rd. ribbed) already loaded with quality ammo. If we are going to keep a global rifle score by the number of combatants put down with a firearm, the AK wins.

Luckily, we have Palmetto state armory making a version here in America!

  4. CZ – have you function tested and used these mags in your AKMs before? Would like to know how they work before stacking them deep, since I’ve heard mixed reviews on them.

    • How extensive a test are you thinking? I’ve fired a couple hundred rounds with no issue, but I’m not dumping 10,000 rounds through them to test the efficacy of a five dollar mag. I’ve got Chines, MagPul, and Korean AK mags that I’d probably prefer for ‘real world’ use simply because hteyre a known quantity in terms of performance. I havent had any trouble with the Unity mags, but theyre mostly for resale when the next ban comes through anyway.

      • A couple of hundred rounds is good enough to verify. I only use military mags with a proven record, but like you, would like to have some inexpensive trading tangibles for future barter.

      • FWIW, I bought some of the great deal Unity mags and found that they wouldn’t fit without modification in MY AMD-65 – I reported that to Roberts RTG and they had a sensible response about variances in some AKs – I’ll likely just sell the Unity mags as we approach any ban on high-capacity mags.

        • THere is some truth to the variation thing. AK’s are all over the map since they were made in so many different countries and many of them Third World.

  5. Concur. RTG parts is a good to go outfit for a lot of your needs, FEMA region 3 located company. I also larded up on these mags as well, tight and cleanly made. Unity makes quite a bit of gun kit stuff, so they are a player. It is not a bad side bet to lay in an above personal use needed amount of proper capacity magazines in case of bans. Also as a commodity in high demand in a post ban second Biden administration, there is lucrative opportunities for resale. As an aside, those are rookie numbers, you got to pump them up.

  6. Rumor has it that the Chinese have shipped a few conex containers of AK’s into the U.S. for all of their military spies/fighters they have sent across our Southern border. Who knows what other weaponry they have sent along for their soldiers to use against us.

    • Supposedly the Soviets have stashes of arms, explosives, radios, etc. squirreled away in various hidden caches in the US for their sleepers. This was detailed in The Mitrokhin Archive.

      • A childhood friend was a Air Force LoadMaster and was charged with several of those loads in ’80’s along with a lot of other “cargos” not on manifests.
