Divisible

Swung by to say hi to my buddy at Grizzly Gold and he had these for me:I’m always a sucker for these discontinued ‘divisible’ silver rounds. Although, really, a hammer and chisel makes any round divisible.

The Metals Pimp is enjoying a semi-retirement so I don’t bother him for much in the way of metals these days. As always, I recommend him as your first choice, but be warned…he’s not answering the phone for anything but larger orders. However, Ive no doubt he will continue in his reduced role with the same integrity and efficiency that he has demonstrated since Day One in that business.

If you’re in Missoula, go talk to Bob over at Grizzly Gold and tell him Commander Zero sent you.

  1. Why not just use pre-’65 U.S. silver dimes and quarters when that time comes? Save the rounds for larger purchases when they can be used intact and are recognized.

    • Two reasons spring to mind, junk coin premiums are higher, I believe…..and you have to convince some idiot that the silver dime from 1961 that your trying to sell him is special and different from the one in his pocket from 2012. Silver rounds, on the other hand, usually say right on them ‘.999 silver’. But..I keep both.

      • That’s why you buy Mercury (winged liberty) and Barber dimes anyway it’s good to have both I have both

  2. Oh wow, I hardly see those any more. For a while it seemed the divisible ones were the rage for those post-SHTF barter trading posts that were to supposedly going to pop up everywhere once the lights go out.

  3. I work in the precious metals/ bullion/numismatic coin profession. I want to make a strong statement to the preppers out there that favor 90% silver dimes, quarters, and halves… keep your trust in junk silver. If you knew what I know about the quality of Chinese counterfeit coins and fake bars that have been entering our marketplace for the last handful of years, you would be concerned.

Keep the course and lean towards less circulated 90% silver.

Premiums have been dropping depending where you source your needs.

I explained to multiple new customers the last week who inquired about 90% and simply dropped an authentic silver Franklin half on the tile floor and compared it to the sound of a fake. Game over.

    • This. Thank you for the inputs. Refer to the old adage, ” stick with what you know”. Just as with “muh guns” categories, stay in one’s lane and aquire only those common, easily identified, trusted source or brands for those important prep items. These may not be accepted in future transactions as it’s obscurity or uniqueness will only add to a hesitation by future merchants or barter scenarios acceptance. Double dipping with one’s finances into tier one top shelf gear, then expending finances, energy, time, in collecting lower tier gear because it was much cheaper, or it will somehow become heroic multiple redundant back ups while squirreled away anyway is wasteful of finite resources. Even rich people with money to burn should also be mindful, staying on a path of logic and reason when dabbling in prep or survival spheres. Stay commonplace, uniqueness gets no special awards in spicy transactions.
