Ruger Security-9 Closeout at PSA

When it comes to a cheap-but-unkillable 9mm handgun that I’d feel comfortable trusting, I lean towards the discontinued Ruger P95 series of guns. I used to be able to pick them up off Gunbroker for around $200 if I was persistent. As of late, theyve gone up a tad but you can still find them in the mid-$200 range.

In another failed attempt by Ruger to get their polyguns into holsters everywhere, they came out with the Security-9…an affordable 9mm with the usual features. Turns out that Palmetto, makers of the JAKL that I’ve become enamored with, are closing them out for $230 which is about $70 cheaper than what they normally dealer out at. This is actually cheaper than the Palmetto Daggers that I’ve been buying lately.

In short, this looks like the cheapest way to get a truck/cabin/hideout/disposable 9mm that you can trust more than a HiPoint and for less than a Turkish 9mm. I’ll probably get a couple just to compare against the old P95’s, but I figured I’d pass it along.

  1. Back when they first came out I needed (wanted) a 9mm but had very little to spend so I got the “best” deal and home came a P-89. That was in 1992 and I think it was one of the earlier ones in the series. so it’s been 31 years now.

All these many years later, I’ve still got it and still have a working duty-rig holster, shoulder holster and OWB and still very serviceable. It may be ugly but it’s never let me down.

  2. I have an SR9 – 2nd Gen that I shoot pretty well. I also think it’s considerably better looking than any poly pistol Ruger has made since its introduction. The Ruger American pistol is especially ugly. The Security-9 got zero looks at the shop I worked at within weeks of its intro. Same with the American series. At least those P-series guns were ugly and purposeful looking.

    • I ordered one for a customer. He specifically wanted the ten round version…
To me it is as ugly as some of the Turkish stuff and makes a Hi Point look good.
For that price range, I’d compare to the Taurus G2/3 series, about the same when you include shipping and a transfer.

  3. I picked up a few trade in cop guns a long time ago. all Sigs
got a 220 for 350 and a 226 for 375. changed out the springs and they work with
the ones I bought so. and I stocked up on magazines too.
replaced all of those springs with new ones by Wolf. total cost on the magazines was like 20 bucks each. way better than the going price of close to 50 bucks each.

  4. The se9 is a great gun for the price. I have several bought new for $299 at Acadamy.
I have put 1000s of rounds through them.
It also helps that the mags work with my PC9.
    I think it’s a good buy.

  5. Not to change the subject. Read a piece today that Palmento Arms is in the process of getting ready to introduce a semi auto copy of the Germany STG 44. The original “assault rifle”. It will be in the 8mm Kurz round

  6. My son and I took Security 9’s to Front Sight a couple years back. No problems noted, unlike some much more expensive pistols.
