New Yorkers in fuel scramble as storm-hit pumps dry up
No sympathy. If youre smart enough to buy a generator but dumb enough to not think about where the next tank of gas is coming from then you probably deserve what happens to you. Some of the best money I ever spent was on these babies:

Wish like hell I’d bought more but I did what i could with what I had. That and a nice jug of PRI-G and I’ve got enough gas stored for most emergencies.
For anyone who’s looking for more jerry cans here’s a link. While I haven’t ordered from Old Grouch, yet, I’ve heard great feedback along with a couple podcast interviews with the owner on prep topics. Yes, they’re flipping expensive!

I feel the same way…but I think this is a telling tale of “Normalcy Bias” even when faced with a week of notice the storm is coming, most people refuse to believe that it will be “that bad” and things will be normal in a couple days after the storm…these folks are looking at weeks or months (or even years) of disruption to thier lives. I know people who are still trying to get back to normal from Katrina!
That said, expand this to the entire nation when the banks no longer function…not pretty!
Keep Prepping!
Where did you get your cans? Would love to stock up on them, but hard to find quality ones.
Century Arms was selling them years ago for about $15 ea. If you ordered $500 worth you got free shipping. So, I ordered a ton of them and sold a bunch and kept a few. Wish I’d bought more.
Given the cost difference between the plastic 5 gallon containers vs the metal ones, to you feel the metal containers are worth the extra cost for fuel storage? If so, why?
Absolutely worth it. For me, it’s all about risk avoidance and mitigation. Plastic cans are cheaper. But they are not nearly as rugged or durable as the metal ones. They are more susceptible to punctures, less resistant to being squeezed and having gas squirt past the threads, are degraded by weather (UV/sun), and are great for ‘recreational’ or ‘occasional’ use like filling lawn mowers and outboard engines. But when you have to throw one in the back of a truck crammed with gear, maybe lay it flat or sideways, have it sit out in the weather and get banged against things like tools, crates and other ‘back of the truck’ contents you’ll want something much more robust. Another way to look at it – in a crisis, we agree that gasoline is going to be extremely important to you, right? So why would you not protect it as best you could for that unimaginable crisis when you absolutely MUST have it? I hate paying for those expensive cans but when it’s the middle of the night, the gas stations are closed, the mobs are heading my way, and the truck is outta gas I’m gonna hate picking up my stash of plastic cans and finding them half empty or leaking even worse.
Yeah, I’m in northern nj, and lack of gas has been an ongoing problem. I have been driving to PA to avoid the fights and 4 hour lines here. It is absolutely crazy, I have never seen anything like it.
Wow, those are two deep!
I know, I shouldn’t care what other people think…but I do. Seeing the lines of folks at the gas station makes it worth overy snarky comment anyone has ever said about the jugs of gas, and shelves of cans and jars out in my garage.
It’s getting much, much worse….
