What’s holding you back from pulling the trigger on a BOV? This one would probably make a good one, but it needs a lot of work, to say the least.
Money, mostly. I just can’t scratch up that kinda coin and I don’t want to borrow it. Seems like there’s always something else that needs my financial attention. But, it’s just a matter of socking away money as time goes by and eventually I’ll be able to pounce on something like this when it comes around.
I hear ya on the money/no borrowing part. I guess from what I have read on here, it sounds like you are mostly set except for a BOV and possibly land/shelter. Great job all around.
$4500 is a lot of money for an elderly truck that looks to have spent more than a few nights out in the weather. And one that doesn’t use common off-the-shelf parts either, I believe?
That’s not to say that something like the M37 would be a bad idea.
We need a modern equivalent. A truck that combines the simplicity of the M37 — no fancy interior to get water-logged and moldy the first time it gets rained on, a cab that can be washed out with a hose, simple body panels that can be unbolted and cheaply replaced or just pounded back into shape with a hammer — with modern readily-available parts. Off-the-shelf parts from NAPA or any scrap yard, not obscure stuff you can only get from a couple crusty old guys with barns full of old surplus.
The GMC-made CUCVs might be candidates, but they’re getting pretty long in the tooth and they were never as “deuce and a half”-simple as the M37s either.
If only someone made an aftermarket “heavy duty offroad” frame for the GM pickups — as is the case with the various Jeep CJs — that could be assembled with off-the-shelf power plant and drive train components, a stripped down cab and bed, and purely functional sheet-metal body panels.
