Sadly, one of my favorite preparedness blogs has disappeared. No point listing which one it was, but it was quite easily one of my favorites as evidenced by the fact that the majority of the commenters were other bloggers as well. It was rather nice to see that same circle of people at the same location. I hope that even though his blog is apparently gone, the blogger himself might chime in from time to time to say howdy and comment.

I’m jazzed! LDS cannery trip tomorrow. This will be my opportunity to fill in the gaps in a few ‘broken’ cases of stuff. Since each case holds six #10 cans, a case that has less than six in it is incomplete or ‘broken’. If you havent been to the LDS cannery, here’s an order form of what you can get and the pricing. Keep in mind that, usually, you cant just walk in and say “I’d like five cases of….”. No, no, no…you have to put in a bit of ‘sweat equity’. You get put into a group of other customers and you take part in the process…you might be the guy who fills the cans, or seals them, or fills them from the bags, or slaps the labels on them, or helps box up the finished one, but you have to take part in the canning process. If nothing else, it gives you an appreciation of how the stuff is packaged and gives you the skills to DIY if you wind up borrowing their portable canner unit. Sometimes when I see a pair of missionaries walking around I’ll offer to buy them lunch (or give them a ride) as a way of ‘paying back’ for letting me use their facilities. And, before anyone asks, no they don’t preach at you at these things. They start the whole process with a pretty non-denominational prayer and thats about all the preaching they do. After that, it’s all business and bunker-stocking. Good folks.

Got to handle a Bushmaster ACR yesterday. Didnt get to shoot it but sure got to put my fingerprints all over one. Ambi bolt release, ambi charging handle, ambi selector, ambi mag release, quick change barrel, side folding stock, gas piston system…pretty cool gun. Also one of the most expensive guns I’ve ever ordered in for a customer at a shade under two grand. For that kind of money I could get two ARs and about 40 mags, 4 Glocks and a handful of mags, or a PTR-91 and 750 mags. The fella who got the gun said he’d let me know when he was going to go shoot it and that I could come along. Should be interesting.

As I was walking to the shop this morning, I saw that the puddles on the ground had frozen over during the night. ‘Tis the begining of the cold season. Coincidentally, hunting season is now in swing. I need to check the zero on the PTR and get out there and show Bambi who sits at the top of the food chain around here.
That certain blogger still has his blogspot address. He stated in his last post that he hoped to return to it at some point in the future.
Sadly, I know which blog you speak of. That blog was first on my list every day, even if I was late for something else. Now yours is the one.
This was the second one by that blogger so maybe in the future, they’ll start another.
Will be truly missed.
Was the blog you mean “Living Out There” as it showed up in my favorites list, or A Journal of Self Sufficiency as the web address shows? I miss that too. He said it was down so he could tend to normal business or something, but now it’s removed entirely. I liked that one a lot. Would love to know what happened and hope all is OK.
I’m going to miss him too.
Best of luck hunting!
Well, I come to CZ first and then to ATH’s blog, and now it is gone completely. He had other great blogger links that I used, and now those are gone, and I can’t remember most of them.
I sure hope everything is okay with him. He did say family was coming to visit, but how are we going to kmow when he shows up again?
we all know who it is CZ…and i have actually been checking on him too. i miss him. he was a dear friend. but, i think that he will be back in his own time. and we will all be here to greet him when he returns.
buddy – sorry i haven’t been around in a bit – there’s been a bit of trauma going on over at our place and we are finally settling down so that i can catch up with my blog friends.
send me an email or something stranger!
your friend,
kymber
oh and have fun at the LDS cannery – i am sooo jealous! let us know what you pick up k?
Yeah’ Aresenius’s blog was #2 on my daily list (no offense), this one is #3 then the wood pile report is #3
Survivalblog’s no #1
I have had the fortunate opportunity to be invited to our LDS Cannery here in town. I live in a major southern city of 3.5 million and finding a way in was not easy. I typically go and work once a month and purchase food about every other time. If there are leftovers on my “off” visits I will purchase a few cases. If we purchase more than eight cases at a time, we have to bring additional manpower to help can. No big deal, there are plenty of volunteers.
Several times the non-members have out numbered the members 4 to 1. It just shows how many people understand our possible future.
It is fun to help out.
The one thing I have learned is that the Mormons donate millions of pounds of food each year to those in need, mainly after natural disasters. They ask for no publicity or thanks. True charity at work.
Keep up the good work.
it is getting colder for certain. no ice here yet, but there will be!
too bad the cases are us shipping only, i’d take a couple!
cheers buddy!
Hey! She let you out of bed to use the computer?
I don’t know any LDS folks well enough to ask them, but I have always wondered if they incorporate firearms into their preps? They certainly have cornered the market on food stockpiling, but I have never read anything about how they plan to defend it when the waters rise.
By and large, I dont think theres an official church doctrine on guns but I’ve yet to meet a Mormon who took the food preps seriously who wasn’t well armed.
i did – but only for a few minutes and only because i didn’t have the bottle of chloroform handy…letting him sit at the computer makes it easy to chloroform him (*laughs evil laugh*)
needless to say – he’s back down again!
hey don’t you owe me an email?!?!?!!?
your friend,
kymber
You are right…there is no church doctrine regarding firearms, but I can tell you as one who is a mormon that at least in Idaho, many of us Latter-Day Saints are well armed. Obviously, it’s not talked about much.
I guess you could say that we haven’t forgotten the lessons of history, namely the murdering mobs of 19th century Missouri and Illinois.
I’m tellin’ ya, man….hot women, preparedness mindset, conservative values, appreciation of firearms…if it wasn’t for that whole believing god thing I’d be right there at the recruitment center signing up……….I wish you guys had an affiliate membership or something.
Yeah’ I’d join the Mormons. Only problem is I like to drink beer, cuss and look at women. Sunday’s are ment for shootin’ for me.
I gotta really give the Mormons credit for how they take care of thier community and its members. There some values we call learn from.
I strongly suspected this might be the case – I just had wondered since I never heard anything “official” regarding the church’s self-defense preps. Like CZ, I dig most of what the LDS church are into, we just have a few doctrinal differences that keep me in mine. I do appreciate all the info and assistance you folks provide.
Thanks for the sentiments…we may not agree on matters of faith, but we can stand by each other on virtually everything else. I’m happy to have many non-LDS prepper friends.
I think most mormons have a strong prepper mentality because they have been told for many, many years to store up food for what is coming. It would appear that we are close to that point.
