Article – Hospitals fight drug scarcity, fear patients harmed

Meanwhile, the downgrade from ‘First World’ status continues unabated…….

“If I have to get one or two months’ supply, I’ll buy it, because our patients need it,” he said. “Hoarding is in the eye of the beholder.”

Some distributors and manufacturers prevent hoarding by allocating drugs based on historical demand. Other pharmacists say it is natural to want to buy more to ensure supply.

“Why did it ever have to get to this point in the first place?” Szandzik asked. “It takes a lot of hours, a lot of labor, a lot of luck to make sure our patients are safe. … And I don’t see it getting better for a while.”

I cannot imagine that this will get any better under the upcoming healthcare ‘overhaul’.

  1. I’ve actually put a lot of thought into this. My wife and I have 8 kids from age 4 to 17. We had some issues 12 years ago getting the care we needed for one of our children. This “rationing” is really nothing new and it isn’t just medication, it is actual physical care. We have thought about what we need to do to make sure we have the best care we can for our family. My wife is an RN and her knowledge helps a lot, but probably the most important thing over the years has been the relationships with Dr.’s we’ve formed. We have close personal family friendships with 3 Dr.’s. Two of them are LMI’s. I hunt and shoot regularly with one Dr. that I grew up with, I have known him all my life. He saved my wife and youngest daughter’s lives when my wife had some issues during childbirth. He did a C-section in under 2 minutes to save both of them. I know because I was there. I believe that all of the liability, procedure, CYA stuff went out the window because of his commitment to us on a personal level. I was the personal relationship that counted. It is just like anything, you need something welded, it is good to know a welder, truck breaks-down, it is good to now a mechanic. You need medical care, it is good to have a personal relationship with a Dr. Relationships with different people is a vastly overlooked area of preparation in my oppinion.

  2. Stock up on animal pen g. When pen was first dicovered, they would give it to an injured soldier, and collect his pee to give it to a lesser injured soldier to drink. True fact.
Today’s animal pen g is way more pure.

  3. I’d agree with statement – went to fill out my prescription and I was given a 5 day supply of what was supposed to be a 90 day. Generic too – not name brand. They filled the rest in within 3 days, but it is a bit strange – and some of my coworkers have had the same experience within the past month as well.

A couple of weeks ago, I seem to recall a post or blog entry which mentioned this was to be expected and that it would get worse as time went on.

  4. This highlights the need to stock up on and have a running reserve on whatever you need to survive, including medications. It also pays to learn how to obtain and use alternative meds, such as local plants that can at least help.

But it is absurd this is even happening in the modern world. But it seems everything else is going down the drain, may as well be medical care too.
