The Walking Dead…finally some nice guns

Man, I dunno where the guys in the gun wrangling department at The Walking Dead are getting their ideas from, but I gotta say it was interesting to see one of these whipped out of a holster:

I could be wrong about that, but S&W only has a couple light-rail revolvers out there in this barrel length.
Trivia: The idea behind ‘hi-cap’ revolver with a light rail came from the NYPD. They had guys who would lead the raiding party carrying ballistic shields. Problem was, they would reach around the shield with their gun arm to hold their pistol in front of the shield so they could fire. The slides on the Glocks would strike the shield during the cycling process, creating problems. So they dreamed up a ‘high capacity’ revolver with an accessory rail for the shield guys to carry.
I must say, the guys at The Walking Dead have been getting much nicer guns.
I remember in the first season you hardly saw an AR or AK…now everyone has them.
The one real peeve I have in this show is the way Rick holds his revolver with that ‘broken wrist’ stance….he holds his gun arm out at eye-height and then extends his wrist downward. I mean, I know he’s British so he probably thinks guns are ‘icky’ but you’d think if he can nail down his accent enough to call his son “coral’, he’d be able to master holding a handgun properly..

  1. Agreed, Beside Ricks zombie apocalypse proof safe queen $2,000 Colt they were sucking for a long time. Now everyone seems to have a good handgun and there are some nice rifles floating around.

Didn’t notice that handgun was a MK23. Good times.

      • Yeah, In that hypothetical either A) Daryl prioritized a good tool pretty heavily or more probably B) He had an el cheapo bowie (which would explain the sheath) and when things went all Zombie ended up finding/ scavenging a better one and swapping it out.

I’d love to own that knife but the price is very hard to justify. Maybe some day.

  2. Thanks for doing the I.D. work on that one…I remember thinking that was one slick looking wheel gun when Maggie drew it out of her holster the other day, but I had no idea what it was.

And yeah, they have seemed to have gone from scrounging for ANYTHING to having a bounty of good tools to work with.

  3. I have noticed the revolver orientation of the Walking Dead. Someone is picking out the good ones or those that are hard to find. Colt Python (rare, out of production), for Rick, then Maggie pulls out a S & W R8. Not rare, but very uncommon. The early versions supposedly came with a polygonal barrel.

    • I’m fortunate enough to own a S&W R8, and it does indeed have a polygonal barrel. Great wheelgun.

  4. I’m a wheel gun guy and I love those Smiths. I had a 325TR for awhile and it was a great shooter. I ended up selling it during a dark time where money was very scarce…I figured it was better to sell the only .45 ACP wheelie I had over any of the .357 Magnums. I’ve regretted it ever since. I’d love a 327 or the R8 but I haven’t found a good deal yet though I did stumble onto a great price on a sweet 2.5-inch 686 Plus.

  5. I got my R8 years ago, as soon as I found out about them. No Polygonal barrel. I was told only the first batch. Maybe 100 or so, had that advertised barrel. The rest have the TRR8 barrel insert and the polygonal barrel is no longer advertised. I have seen polygonal rifling in the HK manufactured barrels. Considering how barrels are made, I would say that S&W got a couple of full length barrels and cut them down to the 5″ sizes they needed and used them until they ran out. They are too pricey to make from what I have read.
